Germany trip cost: Transport
Germany is a vast and diverse country, offering countless opportunities for an unforgettable vacation. No matter the season, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in Germany. For those looking to explore its culture, history, and beauty, it can be difficult to decide where to start. Therefore, it’s best to focus on one particular region when planning your vacation, and then use public transport or a car to get around. Taking the train is an efficient way to explore much of Germany in a shorter space of time, although tickets can be expensive. Alternatively, renting a car allows you to remain flexible while traveling and keeps you from sticking strictly to timetables. Both options can be cost-effective, depending on your needs and the type of vacation you are looking for.
Our advice is to travel by car because you retain your flexibility while traveling and aren’t tied to timetables. If you need tickets for public transport, you can purchase these via the link.
If you travel to Germany by plane and you are looking for a car to rent, you can rent it through Rentalcars. We use Rentalcars when we want to travel by car to discover new destinations. They’re easy to use and book with.
Transport costs can be very different per person, as it depends on which area you are visiting and what you do. The indication below is based on our Bavaria itinerary. The total costs are shown based on two persons. It is good to mention that we drove from the Netherlands to Bavaria.
- Own transport: 2500 km | petrol $260 | parking costs $45 | total $305
- Airplane + rental car: plane ticket +/- $160 p.p. | rental car +/- $360 | 1000 km | petrol $100 | total $780
- Airplane + public transport: flight ticket +/- $160 p.p. | public transport +/- $110 p.p | total $540
If you travel with your transport, it’s easy, just enter the address in the navigation and you’re ready to go. The best way to find a flight ticket is to look at Skyscanner. Tickets for public transport can be bought on-site at the stations.

Germany trip cost: Activities
Traveling to Germany for a vacation doesn’t have to be expensive. The cost of activities can vary widely depending on what you want to do, so planning is important. Entrance tickets are generally affordable, ranging from $18 for a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle and $21 for Lake Konigssee to $82 for a tour of the Eagle’s Nest. Other activities such as ski passes, sightseeing tours, and visiting nature parks are also affordable.
Additionally, many cities offer free attractions such as museums and galleries. By taking advantage of these free activities, you can save money on your vacation to Germany and still have an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Germany trip cost: Miscellaneous
The miscellaneous costs can be very different per person. A couple of costs that most travelers have are listed below.
A water bottle is always handy to have with you. We use a crazycap, which is a water bottle that kills all bacteria in the water using UV. This allows us to drink tap water anywhere in the world through this bottle. So we never have to buy water and can always drink tap water safely.
Finally, you can also buy a sleeping bag, the advantage of this is that you always sleep in “your bed”. If you find it annoying to sleep in unknown beds and do you like hygiene, sleeping in a sleeping bag is a good solution.

During our journey through Bavaria, we stayed in nice hotels, ate at restaurants every night, used our own car, and did many great activities. Our trip to Germany costs were:
- Accommodation $31
- Food: $28
- Transport $29
- Activities $11
Total: $99 per person per day (amounts are rounded). These amounts are based on our journey through Bavaria. We did this trip in our car. For us the total costs for our trip through Bavaria per person were: 10 days x $99 = $990.
To keep the costs of your trip to Germany low, we recommend that you follow our advice per category. By following these tips you can put together a reasonable daily budget for Germany.
Accommodation: It is possible to cut accommodation costs but we do not recommend this. If your budget for accommodations becomes lower, you will in most cases spend the night in poorer accommodations or accommodations that are further away from the center.
Food: To cut costs on food, it is best to go to the supermarket in the afternoon and get something here. This saves a lot of money. It is also smart to choose the accommodations for Beieren that we recommend here because they all serve breakfast which saves you money.
Transport: we traveled through Germany in our car, so transport costs are not high. It is best to go with your transport or book a rental car far in advance.
Activities: an amount of $11 per day for activities is not a lot. You can save on this by not doing only certain activities but we don’t recommend this. After all, you go on vacation to do fun things right?

Even though you don’t have a lot of money to spend, you can still have a great vacation in Germany. You have to do the things below to spend +/- $65 per day.
Stay in cheap accommodations by booking far in advance or staying at campsites. If you do this it costs +/- $11 per day.
To not spend a lot of money on food, consider making dinner yourself and getting lunch at the supermarket in the afternoon. With +/- $22 per day, you should be fine.
For travel costs, if you want to see a couple of destinations, it is difficult to cut back on this. You can, however, consider staying longer at a certain destination and visiting fewer different destinations. In addition, you can also use public transport to your destination, which is cheaper. A budget of +/- $22 per day should be good.
Costs for activities are tough to lower than $11 per day. It is possible by doing nothing, but we do not recommend this, because you want to see things during your trip. You could, however, be a little more critical of what you will or will not do.

The cost of a trip to Germany for two people depends on several factors, including the length of stay, mode of transport, accommodations, and activities. 1 Week trip to Germany cost
A one-week trip to Germany can be quite affordable. Depending on the type of accommodation and activities you choose, a week-long vacation in Germany could cost around $1.180. When planning your trip to Germany, it’s important to consider your budget so that you can spend your money wisely and get the most out of your vacation. Try searching for cheap flights or hotels in advance or look for package deals that may include discounted tours.
The shorter holidays are relatively more expensive than the longer holidays. This is because, for example, flight ticket costs are spread over 7 days and not over 3 weeks. You also often want to do a lot in a short period, which means that your transport costs are a lot higher. So when taking this into account $140 per day is reasonable.
