Germany trip cost: Accommodation

There are several things you can do to keep costs for traveling through Germany as low as possible. For budget travelers, it is best to stay at campsites or hostels. When you travel alone, we recommend staying at hostels because it makes it easier for you to connect with other travelers.

Hostels and hotels in Germany are comparable in cost to other Western European countries. A dorm costs between $17 and $27. Prices for a double room are between $22 and $110, depending on whether you go for a simpler or a more luxurious room.

The best tip we can give you is to reserve the accommodations as far as possible because then you have the most choices to find accommodation that fits your budget. If you book late, you run the risk that accommodations with a lower price-quality ratio will only be available.

For dinner, visit a cafe or restaurant.

In terms of costs, a sandwich costs on average $3. When you go for lunch at a place, this will cost you $10 – $17. You can easily spend $22 for dinner in a restaurant. To keep costs low, you can get food from the supermarket in the afternoon. In the evening we recommended eating in restaurants because this gives you the best travel experience.

The dishes below are worth trying when you are in Germany:

  • Currywurst: This is one of the most traditional dishes from Germany. Currywurst is a bratwurst served with a curry sauce. This is delicious with a sandwich or eaten on its own.
  • Bratwurst with sauerkraut: another traditional German dish is to eat a bratwurst with sauerkraut. You will often find this dish on the menu in the winter months. It is a heavy dish that is perfect if you have been active all day.
  • Schnitzel: Schnitzel is often prepared with pork, veal, or chicken. The meat is breaded with breadcrumbs and is usually served with fries.
  • Käsespätzle: this is the German variant of spaghetti. It is a kind of noodles that are prepared with a lot of cheese. This is our favorite comfort food in Germany.
  • Eisbein: Eisbein is often shown on the menu in Germany, this is a pork leg.
  • Flammkuchen: this is the pizza variant of Germany. The difference with the Italian pizza is that the dough does not contain yeast so the dough does not rise and is therefore thinner.

Germany trip cost: Transport

Germany is a big country which makes it impossible to see everything. For this reason, it is best to choose a certain area and travel there. Germany is an excellent country to travel through by public transport or by car. Tickets for public transport can be purchased buy here. Our advice is to travel by car because you remain your flexibility while traveling and are tied to timetables.

If you travel to Germany by plane and you are looking for a car to rent, you can rent it through Rentalcars. We use Rentalcars when we want to travel by car to discover new destinations. They’re easy to use and book with.

Transport costs can be very different per person, as it depends on which area you are visiting and what you do. The indication below is based on our Bavaria itinerary. The total costs are shown based on two persons. It is good to know that we drove our car from the Netherlands to Bavaria.

Germany trip cost: Activities

Because Germany is easy to travel through, you can do many activities independently. Costs that you should consider in the activities section are entrance tickets, a tour of a specific destination, or special activities such as ski passes.

For example, a visit to Lake Koningsee costs $21 and a tour of the Eagle’s Nest costs $82. If you want to visit the most famous castle in Germany called Neuschwanstein, this costs $18. Because you can do many activities independently, you do not have to spend a lot on activities. This way you can take many walks in nature parks and visit cities without having to spend money there.

Germany trip cost: Miscellaneous

The miscellaneous costs can be very different per person. A couple of costs that most travelers have are listed below.

We recommend that you take travel insurance. We do not recommend traveling without insurance because of the risk. Amounts cannot be estimated when something happens. It is therefore important to take travel insurance.

A water bottle is always handy to have with you. We use a crazycap, this is a water bottle that kills all bacteria in the water using UV. This allows us to drink tap water anywhere in the world through this bottle. So we never have to buy water and can always drink tap water safely.

Finally, you can also buy a sleeping bag, the advantage of this is that you always sleep in “your bed”. If you find it annoying to sleep in unknown beds and do you like hygiene, sleeping in a sleeping bag is a good solution.

How much did Germany cost us per day

  • Accommodation $31
  • Food: $28
  • Transport $29
  • Activities $11

Total: $99 per person per day (amounts are rounded). These amounts are based on our journey through Bavaria. We did this trip in our car. For us the total costs for our trip through Bavaria per person were: 10 days x $99 = $990.

During this trip, we always stayed in nice hotels and we enjoyed every night food at a restaurant.

Accommodation: It is possible to cut accommodation costs but we do not recommend this. If your budget for accommodations becomes lower, you will in most cases spend the night in poorer accommodations or accommodations that are further away from the center.

Food: To cut costs on food, it is best to go to the supermarket in the afternoon and get something here. This saves a lot of money. It is also smart to choose the accommodations for Beieren that we recommend here because they all serve a breakfast which saves you money.

Transport: we traveled through Germany in our car, so transport costs are not high. It is best to go with your transport or book a rental car far in advance.

Activities: an amount of $11 per day for activities is not a lot. You can save on this by not doing only certain activities but we don’t recommend this. After all, you go on vacation to do fun things right?
