For this Mexico itinerary you need at least 2 weeks, if you have the option we recommend doing it in more days, so that you can stay longer at a destination that you like. You can also add destinations to this Mexico itinerary to extent your travel route to 3 or 4 weeks. Our itinerary for Mexico is a good mix between relaxation and awesome activities.
The advantage of traveling in Yucatan is that the distances are not that big and the transportation in Mexico is very good so you don’t lose much time traveling. If you want to spend more time in Yucatán or Mexico it is worth investigating to go to Mahahual, Merida, Campeche, Palenque and San Cristobal de las Casas. We haven’t visited this places due to lack of time.

Cancun is a tourist town in Yucatan and is probably your starting location for your trip. This is because Cancun is very popular among the Americans and you can therefore find cheap flights. The advantage is that you don’t have to fly to Mexico City first. The result of these benefits is that Cancun is a typical tourist resort with huge hotels. Cancun is a good place to stay if you had a long flight and you need to rest. We personal advice to stay 1 night in Cancun and travel the next day to Tulum. You don’t want stay longer in Cancun than is necessary, because there better places to visit which are also cheaper to travel. We stayed in Suites Malecon and we recommend this place because it is very close the airport and the rooms are very big plus they have an amazing swimming pool. The hotel is well located because you have the centrum and the beach close by. Important to note that you have to book well in time because this hotel is very popular. Tip: skip Playa del Carmen, this is just like Cancun very touristic. There are so many nicer places in Yucatan!

Valladolid is the oldest colonial city in the Yucatan province. It is awesome to visit this colonial city, because it is a nice change between the beach and the interior. In Valladolid you will still see an authentic Mexico, which is more difficult in comparison with other (beach) locations. We loved Valladolid because you can escape here from mass tourism. In Valladolid, for example, most people don’t speak English but welcome you with a big smile. This was our favorite destination in Mexico and we love to share our experience with you so that you will be as enthusiastic about Isla Holbox as we are! We initially thought to stay here for 3 nights and ended up staying here for 8 nights. Isla Holbox is an island paradise where everything goes a little slower. You can relax here with often the beach and the sea all for yourself, which is really special. You can make beautiful beach hikes that can last the entire day, encountering different Flora and fauna along the way. For example, you will encounter flamingos.
