#3 Do a tour in Lima

If you want to do a tour with a local to discover Lima, you have a couple of choices. You can do it with a bus tour, bike tour or walking tour. With all these tours you will visit Plaza Mayor, the Santo Domingo Catacombs, Plaza San Martin and Circuit of Water Fountains.

Tip: We recommend taking one of these tours below, because these tours will give you an unique experience and you will not walk the same streets over and over again like many other tours. We don’t recommend to a bike tour because of the traffic in Lima.

Walking tour

The best option for budget travelers is to join a free walking tour. Of course this is not completely free, because at the end you give a tip. The benefit is that you decide for yourself how much you would like to give. The disadvantage of a free walking tour is that many people participate, which can be very busy. In addition, you don’t have 1on1 communication with the guide which you have with a private tour. What the best option is to discover Lima is personal. If you want to get to know Lima on his best we recommend this tour: Half-Day Lima City Sightseeing.

Hop-on / hop-off bus tour

The big advantage of the bus tour is that you don’t have to walk that much. Go for the Panoramic Bus Tour, with this organization you get a good impression of the city. You can choose between a city route or a historical route.

#5 Visit one of the beautiful museums

If you like museums you can indulge yourself in Lima. There are a couple of awesome museums that are worth to visit. The ones we advise are:

  • Museo Larco
  • Museo Pisco
  • Museo de Arte de Lima
  • Museo Oro del Peru

Museo Larco has mainly pieces from the pre-Colombia period. Overall, this is considered Lima’s best museum. Museo Pisco isn’t officially a museum, but it is a great place to learn about the Peru drink: pisco. Museo de Arte de Lima has the largest collection of photography, paintings and other handmade pieces. In Museo Oro del Peru you see a lot of gold.

We recommend Museo Larco, because you see the most beautiful pieces and you get to know the history of Peru. Book your ticket here so you can skip the lines.
